In a historic step to enhance bilateral relations, Canada and Ghana have signed their first air transport agreement, enabling scheduled passenger and cargo flights between the two countries. Announced by Canada’s Minister of Transport and Internal Trade, Anita Anand, the deal permits airlines from each nation to operate up to 14 weekly passenger and 10 weekly all-cargo flights.

The agreement allows for multiple airline designations and access to any destinations within both countries—an approach expected to improve competition and travel options. Minister Anand emphasised Ghana’s growing role in Canada’s global economic strategy, stating that the agreement “opens the door to new opportunities for travellers and businesses.”

Aligned with Canada’s Blue Sky policy, which promotes sustainable air sector growth through international partnerships, this deal further extends Canada’s global network of over 125 air transport agreements.

In 2023, Canada–Ghana two-way merchandise trade topped $380 million, with Canadian exports reaching $281 million. The Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade, and Economic Development, Mary Ng, underscored the economic significance of the agreement, highlighting its potential to strengthen commercial ties and create new business opportunities.
